SAMMY AMEOBI has signed a new contract at Newcastle United, and will play next season on loan at Cardiff City.

Newcastle offered the 23-year-old a new deal at the end of the season which the winger has accepted, and will immediately join the Sky Bet Championship side for their forthcoming campaign.

Ameobi made 67 appearances in a Newcastle United shirt, and his last goal for the club came in a 3-1 victory over Hull City.

It is not Ameobi’s first foray into English football’s second tier, having spent the second half of 2012-13 at Middlesbrough under Tony Mowbray where he scored one goal in nine appearances.

While Ameobi was retained, Newcastle’s remaining out-of-contract players were released. Ryan Taylor, Jonas Gutierrez, Adam Campbell, Remi Streete and Jack Alnwick.

Streete joined Port Vale a fortnight ago, while Taylor is yet to find a club despite being linked with Nottingham Forest and Belgian outfit Standard Liege.

Gutierrez, who scored the winner in Newcastle’s last-day victory over West Ham United, is currently without a club.

Leeds United have given goalkeeper Alnwick a trial, and Campbell has joined Notts County.

Newcastle are taking a look at former Ajax youth player Dani Koks. The 17-year-old was photographed beneath a Newcastle crest by Dutch journalist Mike Verweij on Twitter and it has been suggested the youngster is on trial with the club.
