Emre returns to action with goal
Newcastle United Reserves 1 Manchester United Reserves 1
NEWCASTLE'S Turkish international
Emre was booked,
scored and was then substituted
at half-time in an eventful return
from a calf injury in the final Reserve
League North match of the
season at St James' Park.
Emre, watched by manager
Kevin Keegan, came through his
45-minute comeback unscathed
but the game's major drama
came three minutes from time
when Manchester United defender
Richard Eckersley was
sent off for a professional foul on
Kazenga LuaLua 25 yards from
goal. Magpies' striker Wesley
Ngo Baheng then followed him
down the tunnel after receiving
a second yellow card after running
30 yards to deliberately
barge the culprit.
Middlesbrough referee Ross
Joyce and his linesmen had to
separate both sets of players before
the punishment was administered
to bring an entertaining
game to an end.
Emre limped off, briefly, after
a fifth-minute Ritchie Jones
tackle but returned after treatment
to first earn a lecture from
Joyce for a foul then a yellow
card for kicking the ball away
after conceding a free-kick.
Manchester United, for whom
Gary Neville came through 90
minutes, were already ahead
through Sean Evans's closerange
first-minute finish after
Fraser Forster had dived to push
out a David Gray shot.
But Emre's true quality was
shown with a marvellous 25thminute
equaliser.
He received a pass from Andy
Carroll outside the box, worked
a slick one-two with Ngo Baheng
then conjured his way around
two defenders before striking a
crisp low shot into the bottom
corner from 15 yards.
Newcastle were always prepared
to chance their arm from
long distance and Andy Carroll
shaved the post twice from 30
yards either side of the interval.
LuaLua and James Troisi were
also just off target from distance
but the visitors could have
snatched victory 19 minutes
from time when Frederico
Macheda broke clear only for
Fraser Forster to dive at his feet
and save well.
NEWCASTLE: Forster, Ramage, Kadar, Edgar,
Diatta, Tozer, Troisi, Emre (sub Marwood 45),
Carroll, Ngo Baheng, LuaLua. Subs (not used):
Danquah, Soderberg, Morris, Zamblera.
