NEWCASTLE (4-2-3-1):
5 Sels: Had one or two wobbly moments and could have done better when Villa equalised
7 Yedlin: A lively performance flying down the right until it was curtailed by an ankle injury
6 Clark: The equaliser spoilt his hopes of making a triumphant return to Villa Park
7 Lascelles: Looked a commanding figure at the heart of the Newcastle defence at times
6 Dummett: Solid and dependable as ever down the left-hand side in linking up with Gouffran
8 SHELVEY: More like his old self in the middle of the park, pulling the strings for long periods
5 Hayden: A fairly subdued performance, but was victim of a heavy challenge from Baker
6 Ritchie: Some penetrating bursts in the first half, but had few opportunities after the break
6 Gouffran: Another who faded after looking impressive at times in the first hour
5 Diame: Had a particularly frustrating time, missing two fantastic opportunities
6 Gayle: Worked hard leading the line, but wasted golden chance to make it 2-0
Subs:
Tiote (for Yedlin, 75)
Mitrovic (for Gayle, 79)
Subs not used: Darlow, Hanley, Lazaar, Perez, Atsu.
MAN OF THE MATCH – Jonjo Shelvey – Was right at the heart of Newcastle best moments and set up Diame for what should have been the deciding goal.
