NEWCASTLE UNITED have confirmed the signing of Ciaran Clark from Aston Villa.
The Magpies have handed the Republic of Ireland international a five-year deal after triggering the £5.1m release clause in the player’s contract.
Newcastle, who are also putting Hull midfielder Mohamed Diame through his medical, are ready to start the new Championship season at Fulham on Friday.
Clark said: “Newcastle is a massive club so I’m really happy to be here. Importantly it is a club that is moving in the right direction and pushing for the right things, so I’m really excited to now be a part of that.
“Things seem to have progressed really quickly over the last few days but I’m delighted to have got all done and be part of this squad.”
Benitez told the club’s website: “Ciaran is a very versatile player, as a left-footed centre-back he can also play left-back and as a defensive midfielder.
“He has a lot of experience of English football and will add good balance and competition to our squad.
“I am sure he will progress with us here at Newcastle. We are very happy for him to joining us.”
Clark has emerged through the Villa academy system and played 159 times for the club. He also has 19 caps for his country and played at the Euros.
Newcastle are on the verge of announcing the purchase of Diame. The former Wigan and West Ham man is on Tyneside to complete his medical after they triggered the £4.5m release clause in his contract. Hull could not agree a deal for him to stay.
