NEWCASTLE UNITED have slashed the price of all of their season tickets by ten per cent following the club’s relegation to the Championship.

Having announced their intention to freeze adult season-ticket prices in February, as well as revealing a 54 per cent reduction for some junior season tickets, the Magpies have now gone further and cut prices across the board.

Supporters on long-term price deals will receive refunds or reductions in their monthly payments to reflect the reduction, while those applying for new season tickets will benefit from a ten per cent cut in the cost.

An adult in category two seating will now pay £520 for their season ticket rather than £578, as was the case last season. With Newcastle playing four extra home games following their relegation to the second tier, that takes the average match cost of that category to under £23.

Prices in the family area have been reduced to £68 for Under-18s and £329 for adults, representing a per-game price of £3 for juniors and just over £14 for adults.

It can be argued that Newcastle’s decision to cut prices is a necessary attempt to ensure their attendances hold up in the wake of relegation, but it is still to be applauded at a time when the cost of attending football is a particularly hot topic.

Middlesbrough were recently criticised for raising their season-card prices significantly following the end of a popular early-bird offer.

Newcastle managing director Lee Charnley said: “With our future under Rafa (Benitez) now secured, we’re delighted to announce price reductions across the board for all supporters.

“Your loyalty through these challenging times has been magnificent, and it’s right that we now reward you with savings for our 16-17 Championship season.”

Fans with an existing one-season, half-season or five-game season ticket will be able to renew online, over the phone or at the St James’ Park box office from Tuesday, May 31. General application forms and direct debit forms will be available online from Monday, June 6.
