NEWCASTLE UNITED’S pre-season Tour of New Zealand consisted with two victories and manager Alan Pardew could add to his improving squad further by bringing in a new striker.

The Magpies, who overcame Wellington Phoneix on Saturday courtesy of a goal from Yoann Gouffran, are hopeful of finding another centre-forward.

Loic Remy’s proposed move to Liverpool was yesterday called off, which could see renewed interest from Pardew.

There has been interest in Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku but talk of a £20m valuation and Everton, Real Madrid and Tottenham offers will prevent Newcastle from moving for the Belgian.

That has led to renewed talk of a cheeky attempt to try to tempt Shakhtar Donetsk in to selling Argentine frontman Facundo Ferreyra.

The troubles in Donetsk, a key city in the hostitilites between Ukraine and Russia, have led to many of the club’s foreign players refusing to return ahead of the new season.

Ferreyra, 23, is viewed as a saleable asset and Shakhtar are not keen to let him go on the cheap because he remains under contract until 2018, signed after making a £5m move from Velez Sarsfield last year.

Pardew, who has made a fresh approach for Lyon’s £16m-rated striker Alexandre Lacazette, would still like to another right back, despite landing Holland international Daryl Janmaat from Feyenoord for £5m. Pardew could try a loan deal for Arsenal’s Carl Jenkinson.

Janmaat and Remy Cabella, the £7m buy from Montpellier, are expected to join up with the squad this week after being given extra time off following their appearances at the World Cup. Pardew will hope to have them involved in Germany next weekend when they play two games.

Saturday’s victory in Wellington, on the back of a comprehensive 4-0 win over Sydney FC earlier in the week.

Gouffran scored the only goal when he turned in Vurnon Anita’s cross moments before half-time. However, £7.5m summer signing De Jong was forced off with a toe injury in the first half.

LIVERPOOL MOVE FOR REMY IS CALLED OFF

QPR striker Loic Remy’s proposed move to Liverpool is off after the Reds pulled out due to concerns over the player’s medical. Remy has been with the Merseysiders in Boston, where they are on a pre-season tour, ahead of what was expected to be the completion of a deal reports suggested would be for around £8m.

With personal terms understood to have been agreed, it was initially thought that problems with paperwork had caused a delay to the transfer being sealed, but it now appears it will not go through at all because of Liverpool’s worries relating to the France international’s physical condition.

Remy, 27, scored 14 goals in the Premier League last season for Newcastle while on a season-long loan from QPR and subsequently played for his country at the World Cup. The collapse of the deal could see Alan Pardew make a move. He was expected to become what would have been Liverpool’s fifth new signing of the summer, with them having already recruited Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Emre Can and Lazar Markovic.

Lallana could miss the start of the new season after he injured a knee in training in Boston.
