West Ham 2 Newcastle 2

TWO goals down after 23 minutes, Newcastle United fans must have been fearing the worst at Upton Park.

But the Magpies are made of stronger stuff these days under Kevin Keegan.

Obafemi Martins and Geremi rescued an unlikely point for the Tynesiders as Keegan's men bounced back from a disastrous opening 23 minutes.

The Hammers were allowed to take a two-goal lead courtesy of some slack Newcastle marking.

Mark Noble was allowed the freedom of Upton Park to put West Ham one up, and Dean Ashton found the Newcastle defence in generous mood again when he tucked away a second after getting the better of David Edgar.

Poor defending has been synonymous with Newcastle in recent years, but supporters will hope that Keegan will eventually eradicate their defensive frailties.

But what the Magpies boss appears to have instilled already is a never-say-die attitude.

And after Martins pulled a goal back three minutes from half-time, Geremi completed the comeback with a reaction header.

Keegan will have been far from pleased with the way his side gifted the Hammers their goals, but he will have been delighted with the character his side showed to get an unlikely point out of the game.
