Newcastle Utd 3 Tottenham Hotspur 1
WHEN Sam Allardyce replaced Glenn Roeder in the summer, he claimed his number one priority was turning St James' Park into a fortress. Six home games in, and he's well on the way to doing exactly that.
Five wins and a draw is a great return - all but one of those victories having come in the Premier League - and the latest success against Tottenham was probably the best of the lot.
Solid in defence thanks to the blossoming relationship between Claudio Cacapa and Abdoulaye Faye and inventive in attack thanks to livewire Nigerian Obafemi Martins, Newcastle were superior to Spurs in every department.
Martins, in particular, was just about unplayable, with his 45th-minute opener proving a fitting reward for an eye-catching performance that saw him embarrass England wannabe Michael Dawson.
Nicky Butt was equally impressive in midfield, and Allardyce is finally getting closer to a settled starting XI that can take Newcastle forward in the second quarter of the season.
Tottenham were awful - Martin Jol will be fortunate to survive a performance like this - but better sides than Spurs will struggle at fortress St James' this season.
