Ashley may consider selling

MIKE Ashley could be prepared to sell Newcastle United for the right price, after astonishing claims that he has gambled away £129m of his fortune.

The billionaire sportswear tycoon only bought the club last May but has suffered amazing losses after a series of poor punts in the City's financial markets.

Ashley only took control at St James' Park in May but the turn of events have led to suggestions that he is willing to listen to offers from interested parties.

It is understood that he wrongly gambled on the value of Halifax Bank of Scotland stock, who were at the centre of false rumours it was about to collapse and millions of pounds were wiped off the share price last week.

Ashley publicly maintains a desire to turn Newcastle into a club capable of challenging in the Champions League again.

After Saturday's win over Fulham - the club's first since Kevin Keegan returned as manager - Ashley said: "I just can't wait to get to the summer and sit down and talk with Kevin about what we need to take the club forward."

Over the course of the last few months there has been sporadic suggestions that he is willing to listen to any offers for the club.

Dubai International Capital - who have been trying to buy Liverpool - are known to be considering an approach, while there were also recent suggestions that a locally-based consortium was trying to get Alan Shearer to front a takeover.

Where are your facts in this article? Who did the interview with Mike Ashley when you make these quotes after Saturday's game?

Sloppy sloppy "journalism". The "i can't wait" quote actually came from Terry Mac!

Its been rumored owner Ashley has lost money in the market,so have we all.
But I get the feeling he is in it for the long haul,(Club owner) I like the guy, hope he stays as owner and enjoys his toy, Abramovich certainly does, what a christmas present would love to be in his shoes.
