RAFAEL BENITEZ was delighted that Newcastle United’s players secured a first win of the season this afternoon, before claiming it doesn’t change any of the club’s plans ahead of the transfer deadline.

Benitez has regularly admitted he is looking for new signings and is frustrated there has not been more, which is why he hopes managing director Lee Charnley can get the deals done before the window closes on Thursday at 11pm.

But Newcastle head into a week which could be busy off-the-field by claiming a much-needed three points by defeating West Ham United 3-0 at St James’ Park.

Benitez said: “They know exactly what we are talking about in terms of targets, players going out because we have too many. Hopefully we can do this.

“Nothing changed after the first two games, or even the first three games, nothing has changed now.

"We have a clear idea of what we want to do and we will try to do it. I don’t know if we can do everything but we will try to.”

Newcastle took the lead in the 36th minute when Joselu opened his account for the Magpies following his £5m switch from Stoke City.

After the restart there were two further goals from Ciaran Clark and Aleksandar Mitrovic to ensure that Newcastle have got off the mark following defeats to Tottenham and Huddersfield in the league, as well as Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup.

Benitez said: “Normally whenever you win you are happy. In the way we won here and the performances of the players, the connection between players and fans, it makes you very happy.

“It is always nice to win, especially when you win at home, three goals, clean sheet, team effort, a lot of good performances, so really positive. The team worked very hard, the fans appreciated that.

"They were behind the players. They can make the difference. The main thing for me is the team.”
