NEWCASTLE (4-2-3-1):
5 Elliot: Made early saves from Mooy and Ince, but was fortunate to escape unpunished when he failed to connect with a cross
4 Manquillo: Found himself out of position on a number of occasions and played his side into trouble with some poor passing
5 Lascelles: Lacked composure in the early stages and gave the ball away cheaply as he looked to play out from the back
6 Clark: Fared reasonably well against Mounie, with his aerial ability making him the pick of Newcastle’s back four
6 Mbemba: Had to play out of position at left-back, but made a great covering tackle to dispossess Mounie at the end of the first half
6 MERINO: Was one of the few positives for Newcastle as he looked to get on the ball and drive his side forward
5 Hayden: Did almost all of his work in a defensive capacity and wasn’t able to get forward to join in any Newcastle attacks
4 Atsu: Made an occasional burst down the flank, but conceded possession cheaply on a number of occasions
4 Perez: Struggled to get into the game in the ‘number ten’ role and wasted a great volleyed chance after he was pushed up front
6 Ritchie: Was Newcastle’s most effective attacker by a distance, and forced Lossl into a smart first-half save
4 Gayle: Barely touched the ball in the first half, and was hauled off within a couple of minutes of Newcastle falling behind
Subs:
Joselu (for Gayle, 52): Perked Newcastle up a bit after his introduction, but his best chance was wasted as he scuffed his shot 5
Diame (for Hayden, 76)
Murphy (for Perez, 79)
(not used): Darlow (gk), Saivet, Aarons, Mitrovic.
Man Of The Match: AARON MOOY – The Australian ensured Huddersfield would make a winning start to their home Premier League programme with an accomplished performance capped with a fine goal.
