NEWCASTLE UNITED should confirm the £8.7m capture of Florian Lejeune within the next 24 hours after the French centre-half flew into the North-East to undergo a medical.

Lejeune arrived at Newcastle's Benton training ground this afternoon after weeks of wrangling finally resulted in an agreement over the weekend.

Newcastle and Eibar officials finally agreed on a payment schedule acceptable to both parties, enabling the Magpies to formally trigger the £8.7m buyout clause in Lejeune's contract.

The 26-year-old, who spent a season on Manchester City's books but did not make a senior appearance for the club, should be formally confirmed as a Newcastle player tomorrow.

He will become the club's second summer signing, following Christian Atsu, who completed a permanent move from Chelsea, having spent last season at St James' Park on loan from the Premier League champions.

Lejeune's arrival will be welcomed by Magpies manager Rafael Benitez, who had been growing increasingly frustrated at the clubs' lack of progress in the transfer market this summer.
