NEWCASTLE UNITED will head north of the border to face Scottish Premier League side Hearts in a pre-season friendly.

The Magpies will travel to Tynecastle on Friday, July 14 (ko 7.45pm).

It is the third friendly to be added to Newcastle's pre-season schedule, after trips to Preston on Saturday, July 22 (3pm) and Bradford City on Wednesday, July 26 (7.30pm) were previously announced.

Hearts are managed by former Newcastle coach Ian Cathro, who took over the reins at Tynecastle in December 2016.

Cathro had initially arrived at St. James’ Park as part of former manager Steve McClaren’s backroom team, and remained part of the coaching staff under current manager Rafael Benitez until his departure to take up his first managerial role with the Jambos.

The fixture will be United’s first outing in Scotland since a 1-1 friendly draw with Rangers at Ibrox in August 2013, in which Shola Ameobi bagged a last-minute leveller.

The game will be the Magpies' first against Hearts since August 1995, when Peter Beardsley scored in a 1-0 win as part of preparations for the 1995-96 season.
