NEWCASTLE UNITED have suffered a double transfer setback with Slavisa Jokanovic insisting Tom Cairney will not be leaving Fulham this summer and Tammy Abraham admitting he does not yet know if he will be leaving Chelsea on loan.

Magpies manager Rafael Benitez had hoped to have completed three or four transfer deals by the middle of June, but Christian Atsu remains Newcastle’s only summer signing following a £6.2m switch from Chelsea.

Benitez has identified a number of leading targets, but managing director Lee Charnley has so far been unable to conclude any additional deals. Cairney and Abraham both feature prominently on Benitez’s wanted list, but it is proving difficult to prise either from their current employers.

Newcastle inquired about Cairney’s availability in January, only to withdraw their interest when they were quoted an asking price of more than £20m for the midfielder. It was hoped Fulham’s failure to win promotion via the play-offs would make them more willing to cash in this summer, but Jokanovic is adamant he wants Cairney to be at the heart of his side’s attempts to finish in the top two next season.

Magpies officials have spoken to their counterparts at Craven Cottage, but Fulham’s stance has not changed since the turn of the year.

“He (Benitez) asked for him and they offered £20m (in January), but we did not let him go,” said Jokanovic. “He is not for Newcastle, there is no business there. He fits in at Fulham. When the team has problems, the ball always goes to him and he keeps it.”

While Cairney is one of Newcastle’s leading midfield targets, Abraham is dominating discussions about a potential attacking recruit.

Last week, it looked like a season-long loan from Chelsea was all but agreed, but the deal failed to come to fruition and Brighton made another approach for the 19-year-old.

That has muddied the water somewhat, with Brighton prepared to match Newcastle’s financial package for Abraham, who scored 26 goals in 48 appearances with Bristol City last season.

Newcastle remain keen to push through a deal, but Abraham has hinted he would rather spend pre-season with Chelsea and wait to see what other opportunities present themselves in the remaining two-and-a-half months of the transfer window.

“I’m not sure what I’m doing next season – if I’m coming back, going elsewhere on loan or staying at Chelsea,” said the England Under-21 international. “I haven’t decided yet.

“You have to stay open and things may come at different times, but I have to dream big and that’s what I’m going to be doing.”

Newcastle’s recruitment team are also hoping to push through deals for goalkeeper Willy Caballero, who is a free agent following his release from Manchester City, and defender Florian Lejeune, who has an £8.7m release clause in his current contract at Spanish side Eibar.
