PEPE REINA wants to have his future cleared up after the weekend before deciding whether to push through a return to the Premier League with Newcastle United.

The Magpies are aware of what sort of financial package it will take to land the former Liverpool goalkeeper, but a lot could depend on whether Napoli actually want to keep him.

A report in Italy has even claimed that Reina's advisors have already agreed terms on a move if that is what he wants.

Reina would be more than happy to head to Tyneside to be reunited with his former Anfield boss Rafael Benitez, but he is in no rush to force through a deal either.

The 34-year-old’s thinking would change if he hears over the next 48 hours that Napoli are planning to replace him anyway, with Arsenal’s Wojciech Szczesny being touted for a possible move there.

Reina wants to be clear in his own mind what Napoli are intending on the goalkeeper front before he makes a decision on his own future.

He only has 12 months remaining on his contract so any new arrival with the Serie A club would heighten the chances of him leaving considerably.

Reina is unlikely to sign a new deal if a major rival for his shirt - like Szczesny - was to arrive and he is well aware of how much Benitez would love him at St James’ Park.

The Napoli No 1 has instructed his agent, Manuel Garcia Quilon, to travel to Italy to discuss his future and learn about Napoli’s plans for him.

It will only be then when he makes a firm decision on his future, having made more than 100 appearances in his second spell at Stadio San Paolo and helped secure Champions League football for next season.

His time at Napoli has had its ups and downs and his thoughts have edged towards leaving in recent months after a disagreement between his wife and one of the club’s senior directors on social media.

Newcastle are completely aware of the situation and have set aside a fee in the region of £4m to secure the deal once they have heard back from Napoli and Reina’s agent, Quilon.

If Reina’s signature can be secured then it would lead to at least one departure on the goalkeeper front, possibly more. Tim Krul and Matz Sels are both available, while the future of Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot are far from certain.

Newcastle are already extremely active in the transfer market and are looking to make quick progress by adding to Christian Atsu’s £6.2m move from Chelsea.

Every day brings a fresh name being linked with Newcastle and the latest suggestions are that they have made an offer of Metz winger Ismaila Sarr.

The 19-year-old has attracted plenty of attention and Metz are demanding in excess of £13m, which has put off many clubs. Watford and Lille have also been credited with making an approach.

He was part of the Senegal squad that played in the Africa Cup of Nations in January and made 33 appearances, scoring five times, for Metz last season.

Newcastle are understood to have opened talks with Chelsea over trying to sign 19-year-old striker Tammy Abraham on loan for the season, while Eibar’s Florian Lejeune tops their defensive wish-list at this stage.
