NEWCASTLE have become just the 21st club in the Premier League era to return to the top flight at the first time of asking after relegation.
Monday night's 4-1 victory over Preston guaranteed promotion for Rafael Benitez's men, and here Press Association Sport's Damian Spellman takes a look at how those sides who spent just a season out of the top flight have fared during their first campaign back in the big time.
1994-95 Nottingham Forest (third, qualified for UEFA Cup) and Crystal Palace (19th, relegated).

1998-99 Middlesbrough (ninth) and Nottingham Forest (20th, relegated).
2000-01 Charlton (ninth).
2002-03 Manchester City (ninth).

2007-08 Sunderland (15th) and Birmingham (19th, relegated).
2009-10 Birmingham (ninth).
2010-11 West Brom (11th) and Newcastle (12th).
2012-13 West Ham (10th).
2014-15 QPR (20th, relegated).
2015-16 Norwich (19th, relegated).
2016-17 Burnley and Hull are both back in the Premier League after just one season away, but neither are sure of safety yet with four games remaining each.
