NEWCASTLE United manager Rafael Benitez has urged the Football Association to take action against foul-mouthed Wolves supporters who taunted Jonjo Shelvey.

Benitez was angered by Wolves fans who chanted 'You dirty racist b*****d' at Shelvey during Newcastle's 1-0 win on Saturday after he was banned for five matches and fined £100,000 for racially abusing Morocco midfielder Romain Saiss the last time the clubs met in the Championship in September.

Shelvey, who was booed every time he touched the ball at Molineux, was accused of calling Saiss an 'Arab ****' during the match on September 17, which Wolves won 2-0, in an incident which saw Vurnon Anita sent off.

But the 24-year-old England international had the last laugh on Saturday when he helped set up the goal for Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Asked if Shelvey expected the abuse, Benitez, who had chants of 'You're just a fat Spanish waiter' directed at him, said: “Yes. We knew but one thing the FA has to maybe consider is what the fans were saying (chanting).

“Maybe (the FA should look at that), to control what the fans say and have more respect.”

Benitez had warned Shelvey what to expect before the game but was pleased with the way the midfielder handled the situation.

He said: “It was not an easy game for him but I think he did well. The team worked hard and he showed composure and a cool mind to play and keep the ball. He did a good job for the team.

“He is a professional. He knows you have to concentrate on the game.”

Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles suggested Wolves players goaded Shelvey at the time, but praised him for his man-of-the-match performance in the return.

“It was terrible what happened to him last time,” said the defender. “It should never have happened. Jonjo is not that type of person.

“He handled it (abuse) really well. A few of us told him to keephis head because they might try to do it again.

“I just said 'play your football and you can embarrass them by being the best player on the pitch' and that is exactly what he did.

“Credit to him, he is a smart lad. He kept a cool head.”

Benitez admitted he withdrew matchwinner Mitrovic at half-time because he could have been sent off.

The Serbia international scored the only goal after being booked while he escaped further punishment for a studs-up lunge on goalkeeper Carl Ikeme.

“It was a risk. We could see the atmosphere was not ideal for him and we needed to be sure we were protecting him and protecting the team at the same time,” said Benitez.

Lascelles, who was accused of being offside before he passed to Mitrovic for the goal, insists his team-mate didn't mean any harm to Ikeme.

“He was just going for the ball,” he said. “A defender has shoved him in the back and that made Mitrovic run into the goalkeeper. There was no malice.”
