NEWCASTLE (4-2-3-1):

5 Darlow: Looked shaky after his late error on Wednesday and was fortunate to survive after dropping a cross in the second half

8 YEDLIN: Was a major attacking presence as he bombed down the right-hand side and saved two points with a crucial stoppage-time clearance

6 Hanley: Came back into the side in place of Lascelles and did most of the simple things fairly well against Bent

7 Clark: Showed no ill effects from Wednesday’s own goal and made a crucial first-half challenge to deny Bent in the area

6 Dummett: Continues to look positionally suspect on occasion, although he made a couple of important blocks to prevent crosses going in

6 Shelvey: Wasn’t at his absolute best, but still set up a number of dangerous moments with his pinpoint passing

7 Hayden: Drove Newcastle forward throughout the first half – the game changed when he was forced off in the 49th minute

6 Ritchie: Can’t stop scoring at the moment, with his deflected strike making it 12 for the season in all competitions

7 Diame: Made a massive difference as he replaced Perez, but wasn’t as effective as he dropped into a deeper role following Hayden’s injury

6 Gouffran: Worked away diligently enough on the left-hand side but wasn’t able to offer a sustained attacking threat

6 Mitrovic: Should be much more effective than he is at this level, although he laid the ball off nicely for Ritchie’s goal

Subs:

5 Perez (for Hayden, 49): Slotted into Diame’s role as his fellow midfielder dropped back to cover for Hayden, but was nowhere near as effective as the player he replaced

Ameobi (for Mitrovic, 84)

Lascelles (for Gouffran, 90)

(not used): Elliot (gk), Lazaar, Gamez, Murphy.

DERBY (4-3-3):

Carson 5; Baird 7, Keogh 6, Pearce 6, Olsson 6; BUTTERFIELD 7, Bryson 4 (de Sart 46, 6), Johnson 5 (Anya 76); Ince 5, Bent 6, Russell 5 (Camara 64, 6).

Subs (not used): Mitchell (gk), Christie, Shackell, Vydra.

Man Of The Match: DEANDRE YEDLIN – The full-back’s overlapping runs are a key part of Newcastle’s attacking arsenal, but his defensive qualities were also key as his stoppage-time header prevented Bent equalising.
