NEWCASTLE UNITED will create history on Saturday if they beat Blackburn Rovers to make it ten successive victories in all competitions.

The previous best is nine wins in a row, which occurred in a period overlapping the end of the 1993-94 season and the start of the 1994-95 campaign. The run, which featured victories in the UEFA Cup and League Cup as well as seven league wins, came to an end with a 1-1 draw against Liverpool.

NEWCASTLE’S PREVIOUS NINE WINS IN A ROW

1994

May 7 Newcastle 2 Arsenal 0

Aug 21 Leicester 1 Newcastle 3

Aug 24 Newcastle 4 Coventry 0

Aug 27 Newcastle 5 Southampton 1

Aug 31 West Ham 1 Newcastle 3

Sep 10 Newcastle 4 Chelsea 2

Sep 13 Royal Antwerp 0 Newcastle 5 (UEFA Cup)

Sep 18 Arsenal 2 Newcastle 3

Sep 21 Newcastle 2 Barnsley 1 (League Cup)

A win tomorrow would break the record for successive victories in all competitions, but Rafael Benitez’s side would still have to go some way to set a new record for successive league wins.

In a period overlapping the end of the 1991-92 season and the start of the championship-winning 1992-93 campaign, Newcastle won 13 league games in a row.

However, that sequence was interrupted by two cup draws, with Kevin Keegan’s side playing out a goalless draw at Mansfield and another 0-0 draw with Middlesbrough in the League Cup.

The record for the most successive league wins in a single season is the 11 victories at the start of the 1992-93 season, with the run coming to an end as Newcastle suffered a surprise 1-0 home defeat to Grimsby Town. A win tomorrow would make it nine league wins in a row for Benitez’s side.
