NEWCASTLE (4-2-3-1):

7 Darlow: Didn’t have a lot to do in terms of saves, but continues to command his area impressively and claimed a host of crosses

6 Anita: Ensured Barnsley did not get much joy on their left-hand side, but wasn’t able to make much impact going forward

8 Lascelles: Another hugely impressive display from the skipper, who won everything in the air and was in the perfect position throughout

8 Clark: Provides a perfect accompaniment to Lascelles and is now deservedly ahead of Mbemba in the pecking order

6 Dummett: His distribution remains an issue, but he is defensively solid and is rarely beaten on the outside

6 Shelvey: Wasn’t able to dictate the game in the way he would have liked, but still made a number of telling passes

6 Hayden: Recalled in place of Colback, and made a number of telling interceptions, particularly in the second half

7 Ritchie: Put in an awful lot of effort down the right-hand side, and delivered a superb ball for Gayle’s second goal

6 Diame: Still doesn’t totally convince, but never stopped running and provided a physical threat behind Gayle

6 Gouffran: Continues to justify his place on the left-hand side with a mixture of tireless running and assurance in possession

9 GAYLE: Proved the difference once again as he took the two chances that came his way to make it 11 goals in 11 games

Subs:

Atsu (for Ritchie, 83)

Colback (for Diame, 90)

(not used): Sels (gk), Yedlin, Lazaar, Perez, Mitrovic.

Man Of The Match: DWIGHT GAYLE – Made it seven goals in his last four matches as he exploded into life when it mattered with two accomplished finishes.
