NEWCASTLE (4-2-3-1):

4 Sels: Continues to look extremely shaky and almost conceded a farcical own goal as he spilled a tame shot around the post

5 Anita: Couldn’t get forward as he would have liked, but was somewhat unfortunate to receive a straight red card

4 Lascelles: Looked surprisingly shaky against the powerful Bodvarsson and stood off Costa for Wolves’ second goal

4 Mbemba: Came back into the side after recovering from a knock, but goodness knows what he was trying to do as he scored an own goal

4 Dummett: Struggled to contain Wolves’ attacking threat down their right and wasted possession on a number of occasions

5 Hayden: Retained his place ahead of Colback but failed to get close enough to Wolves’ attacking midfielders as they broke

4 Shelvey: Looked a completely different player to Tuesday night – couldn’t cope with the close attention of the Wolves midfield

6 RITCHIE: Wasn’t at his best, but still managed to produce a couple of dangerous crosses that threatened to get Newcastle going

4 Diame: Doesn’t look particularly well suited to the ‘number ten’ role and was far too predictable and one-paced

4 Perez: Nowhere near as effective as he had been at QPR, although he came close with a first-half shot that was well saved

4 Gayle: Can he play as a lone striker? The jury remains out. Never looked like breaking clear of his marker in the final third

Subs:

Atsu (for Ritchie, 63): Had run riot in the closing stages at QPR, but was nowhere near as effective with less space to work in 4

Mitrovic (for Hayden, 63): Provided some welcome physicality, but wasted the best chance of the game by shooting at Ikeme 4

(not used): Darlow (gk), Yedlin, Clark, Colback, Gouffran.

WOLVES (4-3-3):

Ikeme 7; Doherty 7, Iorfa 6, Batth 8, Borthwick-Jackson 7; Oniangue 8, Edwards 7, Saiss 8; Costa 8 (Mason 74), BODVARSSON 8 (Coady 88), Teixeira 6 (Cavaleiro 71).

Subs (not used): Longergan (gk), Saville, Gladon, Hause.

Man Of The Match: JON DADI BODVARSSON – The Iceland international was part of the side that beat England in the summer, and was a constant menace to Newcastle with his tireless running and powerful approach.
