RAFAEL BENITEZ has told Daryl Murphy and Achraf Lazaar that they will have to wait until Tuesday to make their Newcastle United debuts.

Neither of the August buys have made their bows in a Magpies shirt following moves from Ipswich and Palermo in respective £3m and £5m deals.

Newcastle face Wolves at St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon and then again in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night; with the latter the likeliest fixture for the pair to make first appearances.

Benitez said: “We have nothing special injury wise from Tuesday (the victory at QPR). I don’t think Daryl or Lazaar will play. We have 18 players and we have the game on Tuesday, so maybe they will play Tuesday.

“We will see what happens in the first game and then decide. Some of the players not playing deserve to play in that second game and we will play a strong team on Tuesday.”

Newcastle can climb to the top of the Championship if they overcome Wolves tomorrow and will head into the game full of confidence after defeating QPR 6-0 with a convincing display in midweek.

But Benitez has warned supporters not to expect an all-conquering display every time.

He said: “The team was good and we tried to improve the squad during the summer. When I decided to stay it was because I had confidence in our players and in everything, the city the fans, everybody here. Everyone is trying to help, that is the main thing. We have a city behind the team.

“I was very clear that every game is different. The Championship is a tough competition and we have to be ready for the next game.

“We have enjoyed these couple of days and we have trained, prepared for the game, but we have to respect the team. Wolves are not a bad team. They were doing well even though they lost the other day. It will be totally different to what people expect.

“I watched Wolves’ game (against Barnsley) and they were 0-0 at 72 minutes and they had two or three chances. We have to forget about that result because a lot of fans might expect this game to be easy. It will be tough and we know they are a good team.”
