DEANDRE YEDLIN will complete a £5m move to Newcastle United later on Wednesday, with fellow right-back Daryl Janmaat poised to leave Tyneside to join Watford.

Yedlin was at St James’ Park last night watching two Ayoze Perez goals secure Newcastle a place in the third round of the EFL Cup courtesy of a 2-0 win over League Two side Cheltenham Town.

The victory was blighted by injuries to Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dwight Gayle, who should be available to face Brighton on Saturday despite suffering head wounds, and Rolando Aarons, who is facing a lengthy lay-off after damaging his foot.

Yedlin will not be considered for the game against the Seagulls, but the American, who spent last season on loan at Sunderland, should complete a permanent switch to Tyneside later today.

He is due to complete a medical this morning, having flown into Tyneside yesterday afternoon after Newcastle persuaded Spurs officials to agree to his permanent departure from White Hart Lane.

Yedlin made 21 Premier League starts for Sunderland last season, and ended the campaign ahead of Billy Jones in the Stadium of Light pecking order.

Sam Allardyce toyed with the idea of making a permanent approach for the right-back at the start of the summer, but David Moyes opted to look elsewhere after replacing the current England boss on Wearside.

Moyes signed an alternative right-back, Donald Love, from Manchester United, enabling Newcastle to make a move for Yedlin.

The 23-year-old’s arrival has hastened Janmaat’s departure, with the Dutchman set to complete a £10m move to Watford.

West Ham had been leading the chase for the full-back’s signature, but Watford stepped up their own pursuit at the start of the week and have persuaded Janmaat to move to Vicarage Road.

The defender cost £5m when he moved to Tyneside two summers ago, and leaves having made 77 senior appearances for the Magpies.

His exit will be followed by the departure of Tim Krul, who is set to sign a one-year extension at St James’ Park before completing a season-long loan deal at Ajax.

Krul, who has still not recovered from the knee ligament injury he suffered last autumn, is keen to leave Newcastle in order to secure regular football, but Ajax do not want to buy him until he has proved his fitness.

His new deal protects Newcastle’s investment – his current contract is due to expire at the end of the season – and could yet see the Holland international make a permanent switch to Ajax next summer if things go well in the remainder of the current campaign.

Newcastle have agreed a new long-term deal with Rob Elliot, with the Irishman joining Matz Sels, Karl Darlow and Freddie Woodman in the club’s goalkeeping ranks.

In a busy transfer period, Newcastle are also confident of agreeing a deal for Brentford midfielder Alan Judge, even though the Irishman is not due to recover from a serious leg injury until October.

Judge broke his leg in two places in April, but Rafael Benitez is hoping to complete a deal for the 27-year-old, who was named in the PFA’s Championship Team of the Year last season.

Benitez was happy with his side’s cup progress last night, with Perez scoring either side of the interval despite suffering a head injury that resulted in him playing for more than 45 minutes with extensive bandaging.

Mitrovic and Gayle were unable to continue after their own head problems, but despite admitting the pair had suffered concussion, Benitez is confident they will be fit to face Brighton this weekend.

The prognosis is not as positive when it comes to Aarons, with the winger having required a stretcher to transport him into the tunnel after he suffered a serious foot injury in the first half of the game.

“We are pleased because we won and we go through,” said Benitez, who refused to discuss any transfer matters after the game. “But I am disappointed because we had three injuries.

“We had two concussions that I do not think will be a problem, but Rolando has a problem with his foot. We have to wait and see what the doctor says, but that is the most serious.

“I was talking with them (Mitrovic and Gayle) after the game and they were fine. Hopefully, they will be okay for Saturday.

“It is difficult when things like that happen, but there is nothing you can do. I was trying to protect Gayle, who had been playing in the last few games, and Mitrovic needed match fitness, but we had to change things quickly.

“In the end we won, and hopefully they will be fine. That is the positive, but we are really upset about the injury to Rolando.”
