NEWCASTLE UNITED (4-2-3-1):
5 Sels: Didn’t have the busiest of afternoons but was slightly slow to react to Wells’ opener.
5 Janmaat: Improved after the restart when he had Ritchie to link up with down his flank
5 Mbemba: Looked like he was doing everything at a slow pace but defended reasonably well until he was partly to blame for the winner
4 Lascelles: Will be frustrated to have allowed both Wells and Payne to score just a week after Smith got the better of him ay Fulham
5 Dummett: Joined in with the attacks on a number of occasions but often unable to send over a decent cross;
6 Shelvey: Was influential in the first half to justify his inclusion but did allow van la Parra to cross for the opener
6 Hayden: Not as effective as he was at Fulham but passed the ball around neatly in the middle;
5 Anita: Always works hard but it was hard for him again as a makeshift winger
5 Diame: Surprisingly didn’t make an impact behind the striker when a lot rested on him
4 Aarons: Lost possession a number of times and his best work was done in a defensive sense when he needed to be a creator;
5 Gayle: Will be relieved to have headed in the rebound from a missed penalty that had summed up his day
Subs:
RITCHIE (for Aarons 46): After one and a half games the £12m winger has already emerged as the team’s key player. 7
Perez (for Diame 75)
Armstrong (for Janmaat 83)
Subs (not used): Darlow (gk), Gamez, Clark, Colback.
HUDDERSFIELD TOWN (4-4-2): Ward 7; Smith 6, Hudson 7, Schindler 7, Lowe 7; Lolley 7 (Payne 81), Hogg 6, MOOY 8, Van la Parra 7 (Scannell 71); Wells 7 (Palmer 64, 6), Kachunga 7. Subs (not used): Coleman (gk), Cranie, Stankovic, Hefele.
MAN OF THE MATCH: Aaron Mooy – the Australian midfielder made life difficult for Newcastle by breaking things up and protecting the visiting defence.
