THE loan market can be very beneficial in a gruelling Championship season and also provides a spring-board for players to force their way into the thoughts of top-flight managers.

Over the last few years, Aitor Karanka has used it to good effect by attracting a number of players on a temporary basis from Premier League clubs or even further afield.

Newcastle United will be looking to bolster numbers in a similar manner as they attack the Championship and they have already been linked with the likes of Patrick Bamford among others.

Uruguayan Gaston Ramirez thrived for Middlesbrough last season after joining from Southampton and is wanted back on a permanent basis. The loan system is not something new either, it is easy to remember Stewart Downing being a revelation for Sunderland briefly in 2003 and Marlon Harewood scoring a goal or two at Newcastle United the last time they were in the second tier.

There have been changes to the system ahead of the new season, which will no longer allow English Football League teams to take players on short-term emergency deals. Loans must now run from window to window.

Having already spent big in the transfer window, sports writer Jonathan Barber looks at five players who Rafael Benitez could bring in on loan to bolster the Magpies’ squad as they look to push for promotion back to the top-flight .

Patrick Bamford

The Northern Echo:

The 22-year-old is no stranger to the division having already had productive spells at Derby and Middlesbrough. Despite failing to score in the Premier League last season with Crystal Palace and Norwich, Bamford is a proven goalscorer at Championship level and is equally effective coming in from the right flank as he is as the main striker.

Chelsea will almost certainly look to loan out Bamford once again and another season in the Championship is a distinct possibility for the England under-21 international after failing to impress in the top-flight.

Ben Chilwell

The 19-year-old left-back has reportedly attracted interest from Liverpool after impressing on loan at Huddersfield last season and in the FA Cup with Premier League champions Leicester. Despite making only a handful of senior appearances, Chilwell looks destined for a distinguished career at the top level and if made available for loan he would be a very useful addition.

The teenager has a good change of pace and excellent crossing ability, making him the ideal full-back for a side such as Newcastle who will look to be on the front foot this season.

Brad Smith

Another young left-back who would be an ideal target on loan for the Magpies, Smith is already a full Australia international.

The 22-year-old remarkably left Liverpool last June, only to re-sign in November and admitted in an interview with magazine FourFourTwo that he was open to a loan spell.

The Aussie made only ten appearances for Liverpool last season but looked assured when England faced Australia at the Stadium of Light in May. Smith is another potential loan target who perhaps has ambitions of remaining in the Premier League but could be lured by the prospect of playing under Benitez.

Alex Pritchard

The 23-year-old suffered from injury early last season and made just four appearances, one for parent club Tottenham and three for West Brom. However, similarly to Bamford, he has undoubted quality and is tried and tested in the second division.

Pritchard scored 12 while with Brentford for the 2014/2015 season and goals from midfield could be vital as Benitez’s side look to bounce straight back to the Premier League.

Bright and creative, the England under-21 international also contributed seven assists with Brentford and is a high quality player at this level.

Andreas Pereira

The Brazilian found first team opportunities hard to come by with Manchester United last season and is another who would benefit hugely from regular first team football.

The 20 year-old is unlikely to feature in Jose Mourinho’s plans but showed flashes of his brilliance in cup competitions for United last season, including a brilliant free-kick against Ipswich in the Capital One Cup.

Whilst not having experience at Championship level, Pereira looked at ease when facing lower league opposition for the Red Devils and would be comfortable on the wing or just behind the striker.
