NEWCASTLE UNITED will start life in the Championship with a Friday-night trip to Fulham following the release of the fixture list for the new EFL season.

The Magpies will kick off their first campaign in the second tier for seven years with a visit to Craven Cottage, and the game has been selected for live coverage on Sky Television.

As a result, the fixture on Friday, August 5 will be the opening game of the 2016-17 season in all four leagues.

Newcastle’s opening home game will see them host Huddersfield Town the following Saturday, before Reading visit St James’ Park on Wednesday, August 17 for the first midweek game of the season.

September sees potentially difficult trips to Derby, QPR and Aston Villa, with Newcastle due to visit Elland Road to take on Leeds on November 19.

Rafael Benitez’s side are at home on Boxing Day, with Sheffield Wednesday providing the opposition, and are also on Tyneside on New Year’s Eve, when they are due to host Nottingham Forest.

Their first game of 2017 will be a trip to Blackburn on January 2, and four of the final six matches of the season will be played at home.

Newcastle’s penultimate fixture takes them to Cardiff City, with the season ending on May 7 with a home game against Barnsley.
