SEYDOU DOUMBIA’S first appearance at St James’ Park was not enough to ensure Newcastle United Under-21s would avoid defeat against Stoke City.

The Ivorian played the first half before making way at the break following his move from Roma on loan but the Potters ended up winning 2-1.

Newcastle levelled things in the 21st minute despite being down to ten men because of Jamie Sterry’s red card in the 11th minute for a professional foul on Oliver Shenton. That allowed Dominic Telford to score from the spot for Stoke.

But Daniel Barlaser struck a penalty ten minutes later for the home side after Callum Roberts was brought down in the box.

Stoke made the extra man count after that, even though it was a close affair. With 13 minutes remaining Lewis Banks powered in a sweet winner.

Newcastle: Darlow; Sterry, Lascelles, Williams, Gibson, C Smith (L Smith 46), Barlaser, Longstaff, Laidler (Adu-Peprah 81), Roberts, Doumbia (McNall 46). Subs (not used): Smith, Gibson.
