AS Andros Townsend looks to emulate his boyhood hero, David Ginola, Chief Sports Writer Scott Wilson takes a look back at Newcastle's greatest ever wingers:

JIMMY SMITH (1969-75)

Nicknamed ‘Jinky’, the Scotland international was a darling of the St James’ Park crowds in the early 1970s after moving to Tyneside in an £80,000 switch from Aberdeen.

TONY GREEN (1971-73)

He might only have made 33 league appearances after becoming Newcastle’s second-most expensive signing, but Green established himself as a cult icon before a cartilage injury curtailed his career.

TERRY HIBBITT (1971-75 and 1978-81)

Immortalised in a terrace anthem that still gets a regular outing, Hibbitt made more than 200 appearances for the Magpies and was the chief supplier to Malcolm Macdonald.

CHRIS WADDLE (1980-85)

The Northern Echo:

Waddle played as both a winger and central midfielder during his time with Newcastle, and is regarded as one of the finest players to represent the club. His lazy, languid style belied a remarkable technical ability.

DAVID GINOLA (1995-97)

The Northern Echo:

The best of Newcastle’s Premier League-era wide men, Ginola was a key part of the ‘Entertainers’ side that dazzled in the mid-1990s. He spent two seasons on Tyneside and produced an array of memorable moments.
