WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS have extended the loan of defender Mike Williamson from Newcastle United until the new year.

The centre-half has had a successful spell in Staffordshire, with Wolves conceding once in the three games he has featured in.

Newcastle have allowed Williamson to extend his stay until January 16 which could see him make another 11 appearances for the Championship side.

He was signed to solve a defensive crisis brought on by the injury to Kortney Hause and head coach Kenny Jackett has been impressed with the defender.

“We are delighted that the deal has been extended and that Mike will be with us through a very busy December and Christmas period," he said.

“It is quite even through November but then there are six games in December including that busy Christmas and we don’t a situation where we get caught out.

“In the Middlesbrough game we were a goal up and doing okay and then had to put a midfield player back into defence which cost us on that particular day at a time when the performance was going very well.

“Mike will give us some real competition and allow us to take our time with the players coming back.

“He has brought a lot of experience and physical presence to the back four and to the club and has helped the players around him at a time when we have had a number of injuries to centre backs.”
