NEWCASTLE (4-2-3-1):
7 Elliot: Made a fine second-half save to deny Walters, and manfully remained on the field despite his thigh problem clearly worsening
6 Janmaat: Edged his personal battle with the dangerous Arnautovic, but suffered a late knock and is another doubt ahead of Bournemouth
7 Mbemba: Made some excellent interceptions to frustrate Walters, although was fortunate not to be punished for a first-half air kick
8 COLOCCINI: Justified Newcastle’s efforts to get his derby-day dismissal overturned with a controlled and authoritative performance
6 Dummett: Defensively resilient despite the best efforts of Shaqiri, but doesn’t offer much of a threat breaking forward
6 Tiote: Gradually found his stride after some errant first-half passing and is beginning to look more like his old self
4 Anita: Recalled to replace the injured Colback, but sloppily conceded possession on a number of occasions and didn’t look sharp
5 Sissoko: Made some useful rampaging runs forward, but should have done much better when the penalty area opened up in the second half
5 Wijnaldum: Started brightly, but quickly faded from prominence – does playing on the left-hand side blunt his threat?
6 Perez: Involved in most of Newcastle’s best moves, and came close with a curling effort that fizzed just past the post
6 Mitrovic: His attempts to get Wollscheid sent off were embarrassing, but he struck the post with a superb first-half header
Subs:
De Jong (for Tiote, 70): Provided a few bright flashes – might it be time to shuffle things around to get him into the team? 5
Lascelles (for Janmaat, 83)
(not used): Woodman (gk), Haidara, Gouffran, Thauvin, Cisse.
STOKE (4-5-1):
BUTLAND 9; Johnson 6, Shawcross 7, Wollscheid 7, Pieters 6; Shaqiri 5 (Crouch 90), Whelan 5, Bojan 5 (Affelay 59, 4), Adam 4, Arnautovic 5 (van Ginkel 88); Walters 5.
Subs (not used): Haugaard (gk), Wilson, Ireland, Diouf.
Man Of The Match: JACK BUTLAND – Produced three excellent second-half saves, and will surely start for England this month against either Spain or France.
