NEWCASTLE (4-2-3-1):
5 Krul: Made a decent late save to deny Bus, but will probably think he should have done better with Wednesday’s winner
4 Janmaat: Wasn’t his usual bright self in terms of getting forward and failed to reappear after the interval
6 WILLIAMSON: Was the pick of the Newcastle side for most of the night, which probably says much about the failings of those around him
5 Lascelles: Was slow to close down McGugan for the decisive goal, but at least won his fair share of headers
3 Mbemba: Patently isn’t a left-back and didn’t look comfortable all evening – his night was epitomised by the shot that went for a throw in
4 Anita: Was clearly instructed to sit, but surely that didn’t mean never straying from within five yards of the back four
3 Wijnaldum: Another really poor performance – if he’s the Dutch Player of the Year, it’s no wonder they’re struggling to make Euro 2016
2 Thauvin: Repeatedly conceded possession, dawdled up and down the flank and was subbed at the break – a dreadful display
4 Sissoko: Another ineffectual display from a player who is stuck in a rut, although he did hit the post early on
4 Obertan: Typically frustrating as he combined long spells of inactivity with a series of misplaced crosses
3 De Jong: Was like a fish out of water when he was stationed as a lone striker, and wasted two late chances for an equaliser
Subs:
Mbabu (for Janmaat, 46): Clearly wanted to make his mark on his debut, but a less tolerant referee might have sent him off 4
Perez (for Thauvin, 46): Provided some much-needed energy when he came on for the second half, but didn’t look like scoring 5
Toney (for Obertan, 70)
(not used): Elliot (gk), Coloccini, Barlaser, Gouffran.
SHEFF WED (4-4-2):
Wildsmith 6; Palmer 6, Loovens 7, Lees 7, Wiggins 6; Sougou 8 (Bannan 86), SEMEDO 8, McGugan 8, Helan 7; Matias 6 (Bus 64, 7), Joao 7 (Nuhui 80).
Subs (not used): Price (gk), Turner, Lopez, Pudil.
Man Of The Match: JOSE SEMEDO – The Sheffield Wednesday midfielder ran the game, despite coming up against opponents supposedly worth an eight-figure sum.
