STEVE MCCLAREN has named a much-changed starting line-up for the Capital One Cup second round fixture at home to Northampton Town.

Only Massadio Haidara and Ayoze Perez are retained from the starting XI that faced Manchester United on Saturday, with McClaren handing home debuts to Karl Darlow, Jamal Lascelles and Florian Thauvin. Darlow and Lascelles were 2014 signings from Nottingham Forest but spent the entirety of last season on loan to the City Ground outfit.

Elsewhere, Siem De Jong makes his first start of the season after suffering a collapsed lung last year, while Daryl Janmaat is available after serving a one-match suspension for his sending-off at Swansea City.

Rolando Aarons will be given an opportunity to impress, alongside fellow fringe players Mike Williamson, Yoan Gouffran and Cheick Tiote.

Ivan Toney, who signed for Newcastle from the Cobblers in the summer, makes the bench against his former side, while £13m signing Aleksandar Mitrovic is also among the substitutes.

NEWCASTLE UNITED (4-2-3-1): Darlow; Janmaat, Lascelles, Williamson, Haidara; Tiote, Gouffran; Aarons, De Jong, Thauvin, Perez. Subs: Elliot, Dummett, Mbemba, Colback, Wijnaldum, Toney, Mitrovic
