JOHN CARVER and Steve Stone have been axed from Newcastle United as the club’s hierarchy paves the way for Steve McClaren’s appointment later this week.

Carver has been told he will not be retained on the Magpies’ coaching staff after a disastrous spell in charge in the second half of last season that saw him win just three of his 19 games in charge.

The former assistant signed an eight-year contract in September 2012, but Mike Ashley has opted to tear up the final five years of his deal rather than retain him as part of McClaren’s new backroom team.

Stone, who was first-team coach under Alan Pardew, has also been dismissed, having worked closely with Carver in the final stages of last season.

McClaren is due to return to England from a family holiday in Crete later this evening, and will be confirmed as Newcastle’s next head coach either tomorrow or Thursday.
