JONAS GUTIERREZ expected more from Newcastle United after learning he was not receiving a new contract in the same telephone call as Ryan Taylor.

Gutierrez and Taylor were together when John Carver, who remains head coach while the search for a replacement continues, called to inform the latter about the club’s decision.

Both players were told they will become free agents once their existing deals at St James’ Park expire on June 30.

Taylor said: “John Carver rang me. He told me the club would not offer me a new deal. I had a good chat with him and he is a good friend of me. He then asked me to pass the phone to Jonas.

“John was obviously upset about it. He didn’t want to tell two good pros that it was coming to an end. I can’t really blame John because he is under instructions what to do.”

But Gutierrez was not as happy with the way he learned his seven year stay at Newcastle was coming to an end. He has already had a pop on social media, but he is still disappointed.

Gutierrez, who battled back from testicular cancer to reclaim his place in the side before scoring the important second goal against West Ham that helped keep Newcastle up, said: “You have to move on. I can understand the football issues, those type of things.

“But the most important thing is that they call me, call my agent and say ‘thank you’ and say they are going to release me ... that's more the way to do it.”

Newcastle, who are pursuing Patrick Vieira or Steve McClaren as the new boss, are working on plans for pre-season and it seems they are heading for the United States.

The club have not confirmed anything as yet, but the Milwaukee Brewers claim the Premier League club will play a friendly with Mexican side Atlas FC at their Miller Park home on July 14. Newcastle are yet to announce their finalised pre-season programme.
