ROLANDO AARONS will be available for Newcastle’s trip to Liverpool on Monday – but head coach John Carver must decide whether to pitch the winger straight into the starting line-up.

Aarons returned to full training last week after recovering from the latest in a long line of injury problems that have blighted his breakthrough season in the senior set-up.

He travelled to the Stadium of Light with the rest of the Newcastle squad ahead of Sunday’s Wear-Tyne derby, but did not even make the substitutes’ bench as Carver opted not to take any risks with his fitness.

With another full week of training under his belt, he looks certain to be part of the match-day squad for Monday’s game at Liverpool, and there will be a temptation to thrust him straight into the side given Newcastle’s obvious need for a lift in the wake of yet another derby defeat.

For all that Aarons is still to start a single Premier League game, he has provided two of the most memorable moments of the season courtesy of his sparkling cameo from the substitutes’ bench in August’s 3-3 draw with Crystal Palace and his superb strike past Willy Caballero in October’s Capital One Cup win at Manchester City.

A chronic lack of pace was one of Newcastle’s main failings at the Stadium of Light last weekend, and with Sammy Ameobi’s form on the left-hand side having nosedived in the last month or so, Aarons’ return provides a rare opportunity to inject some positivity into proceedings.

The 19-year-old was one of the most talked-about prospects in the country in the autumn, and his future beyond the end of the season remains uncertain after talks over a new contract broke down before Christmas.

It was reported that Aarons’ representatives had rejected a six-year deal worth around £6,000-a-week, and Newcastle officials are not believed to have returned to the table with an increased offer.

That could change in the summer, with Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal all having been credited with an interest in the teenager.
