THE depth of the Newcastle United squad was apparent again last night as the club's development side romped to a 5-0 win over Aston Villa.

The Magpies' second string claimed the lead in the fifth minute at St James' Park as Callum Roberts drilled home a low shot from the edge of the area.

Adam Armstrong doubled his side's lead when he converted Kevin Mbabu's low cross from inside the six-yard box, and the striker, who starred in last week's Capital One Cup win at Manchester City, scored again when he drilled home a fierce strike in the 70th minute.

Haris Vuckic claimed Newcastle's fourth goal with two minutes left, converting Roberts' lay off, and Dan Barlaser made it five in the final minute when he drilled home a low shot after neat approach play from Armstrong.

Newcastle: Woodman, Mbabu (Olley 56), Gibson, Bigirimana (Kemen 68), Gillesphey, Satka, Vuckic, Barlaser, Ferreyra (Gilliead 77), Armstrong, Roberts.
