Frustration was the name of the game as Middlesbrough's run without a Championship win now stands at four.

A terrible start at Oakwell saw Garry Monk's side fall behind twice in the opening ten minutes against Barnsley before clawing themselves level for good after an hour through Britt Assombalonga.

But despite having numerous chances to earn a victory, the hosts came closest to victory when Harvey Barnes hit Darren Randolph's left-hand post.

Monk said: "We are frustrated. We came to get the three points and didn't manage to do that and only managed to get one. The game itself was a frantic opening and the first ten or 15 minutes was frantic from both teams and there wasn't really much control.

"Unfortunately for us, in what has been similar in a lot of the games recently, we have conceded that first goal. It was very hard to be critical as it was an own goal and that can happen. But the second goal was avoidable from us. It came from a mistake and we have unfortunately done that too often in recent games."

Ashley Fletcher was the Boro player credited with Barnsley's first after an inswinging corner was deflected in.

Martin Braithwaite equalised with a neat finish from Daniel Ayala's flick, but Cameron McGeehan capped a busy first ten minutes with a header past Randolph.

Monk added: "The response we have is always excellent and we responded well to that first goal and the second one. We totally dominated the game after that first 10 or 15 minutes.

"It was frustrating as we got into some really good positions and created some good opportunities to score the goals and win the game and we weren't clinical or ruthless enough. That is something we need to get better at in both boxes in not causing our own mistakes and giving us that uphill battle. Then, you have to be ruthless when you are dominating games like that."

Stewart Downing, who was recalled to the starting 11 by Monk, was convinced his team were going to triumph.

He said: "Even at 2-1 down I still thought we were going to win. We had a lot of possession and once Brit got the goal I thought it was only going to go one way.

"The fans were behind us and I thought we'd nick it late on but it wasn't to be.

"There were a lot of positives with Britt getting on the scoresheet and Martin too.

"I'm sure the manager has seen a lot of good things but he's probably also seen some things he's not happy with because we're conceding too many sloppy goals."
