MIDDLESBROUGH have accepted they will have to make changes to the Riverside Stadium in the wake of the unsavoury scenes that followed Saturday’s 2-0 win over Millwall.

Boro have launched an inquiry into the post-match events that saw hundreds of supporters pour on to the field, with a small number heading over to goad Millwall’s travelling support.

Bottles and seats were thrown between the two sets of fans, and the Football Association have asked Middlesbrough to provide a detailed report on the incident, outlining how they intend to prevent a recurrence.

A Middlesbrough statement said: “Further to the scenes after the final whistle against Millwall last weekend, the club are working to identify those fans that entered the playing area with the intention of provoking the visiting supporters and also those individuals who engaged in the throwing of missiles at other supporters, the police and MFC stewards.

“Despite repeated communication to fans, we were disappointed to see a minority disregard the messages by entering the pitch at full-time.

"While we acknowledge that a number of fans meant no harm – although there were no excuses for the blatant disregard of our repeated appeals for fans to stay in their seats – their presence on the pitch created a situation for other individuals, who were intent on provoking the Millwall fans in the South East corner of the stadium and creating a disturbance.

"That type of behaviour is not acceptable and, using our extensive CCTV footage, we are working to identify those people with the aim of bringing them to justice.

"Due to the behaviour of this small number of fans, the Football Association have asked the club to provide a detailed report on the incident and how we intend to prevent a recurrence.

"We are now faced with the costly measure of installing additional barriers, which is not only an unplanned expense, but will undoubtedly restrict the free movement of the majority of fans who respect the stadium regulations.

“We are awaiting the response of the FA before establishing the full range of measures that we will have to implement, but it is clear that any repeat of the incident at the Millwall game could have serious consequences.

“We are requesting the cooperation and assistance of all genuine Boro supporters to prevent the type of behaviour that can damage the club’s reputation.”
