MIDDLESBROUGH’S interest in this season’s Checkatrade Trophy came to a fittingly disappointing end as they crashed to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Blackpool.

Paul Stephenson’s side have lost all three of their Checkatrade group games, and fell behind in the first half of tonight’s game as Danny Philliskirk headed their League One opponents into the lead.

Boro boasted first teamers Tomas Mejias, Ryan Shotton and Lewis Wing in their starting line-up, but fell further behind when Sean Longstaff scored with a long-range effort shortly before the break.

The Teessiders pulled a goal back nine minutes after the interval when Wing set up Luke Armstrong for a powerful finish, but Blackpool restored their two-goal advantage as Sessi D’Almeida powered a finish past Mejias.

The hosts added a fourth goal in the closing stages, with Philliskirk slotting home from close range to claim his second of the night.

Middlesbrough: Mejias, Hegarty, Shotton, Brewitt, McGinley, Coulson (O’Neill 77), Liddle, Wing, Sylla (Malley 46), Miller, Armstrong.
