GARRY MONK anticipates further ‘comings and goings’ before the end of the transfer window, but is delighted with the way his Middlesbrough side are shaping up ahead of the start of the Championship season.

Boro completed their pre-season preparations with a 2-1 win over German side Augsburg this afternoon, with Adam Forshaw’s last-minute winner following an earlier strike from Martin Braithwaite.

Braithwaite was one of six summer signings to feature in today’s game, with Monk having spent more than £40m since being appointed at the Riverside.

Some of today’s players are likely to leave before the transfer window closes, with the likes of Ben Gibson, Gaston Ramirez and Marten de Roon the subject of intense speculation, and Monk anticipates further business in the next four weeks.

“We’ve concentrated a lot on moving players out as well as bringing players in, and that balance is crucial,” said the Boro boss.

“Of course, when you’re spending money you need to bring money in the other way, and I think we’ve tried to maximise both ways. There’s still a bit of coming and going to be done, but we’ll continue to try to do it in a good way.”

Braithwaite was the most impressive of Boro’s summer signings this afternoon, scoring with a fierce driven shot before hitting the woodwork in the second half.

The Northern Echo:

The Denmark international formed a three-man attacking line with Britt Assombalonga and Patrick Bamford, and with Ashley Fletcher coming off the bench to set up Forshaw’s winner and Rudy Gestede also coming on as a substitute, Boro boast an abundance of attacking threats.

“We have a lot of options in attack, but we concentrate on everything, attacking and defending as a team,” said Monk. “I want us to be a threat. We saw some really positive play, and the signs of what we could be capable of.

“There is still a long way to go, but there were some real positives offensively and defensively. It’s a matter of time, and the players need some work. We’ve got new faces as well as some boys that have been here before, and when you’re trying to bring in new ideas and new methods, it takes time.

“But the players’ attitude was proved today, and there were some really good signs, which is important at this stage.”

Augsburg finished in mid-table in the Bundesliga last season, so Boro’s victory was a notable one, even if the result ultimately counted for nothing.

“This game was going to test us, because we were playing against a really good side, technically and physically,” said Monk. “We knew defensively we were going to be tested, and we needed to be tested offensively as well in terms of what we were trying to do.

“That’s why I always think these are good games, against these type of oppositions. It’s not always going to be similar to what you are going to face in the league, but in terms of testing what you have been doing and the levels the players are at, it highlights things.

“There are a lot of things to improve, but there were also a lot of positives today. Overall, it was a really good test, and one the players did well with.”
