EVERTON (4-2-3-1): Stekelenburg 5; Coleman 8, Jagielka 7, Williams 6, Baines 7; Barry 8 (Cleverley 90), GUEYE 8; Mirallas 6 (Deulofeu 72), Barkley 8, Bolasie 8; Lukaku 7 (Valencia 66, 5). Subs: Robles (gk), Lennon, Funes Mori, Holgate.
MIDDLESBROUGH (4-2-3-1):
5 Valdes: Made a couple of half decent stops in the second half but beaten three times;
6 Barragan: Found it as hard as he has since stepping into English football even if he still did things right
5 Ayala: Rounded by Coleman in the build up to the Irishman’s goal and not at his best
5 Gibson: There were more gaps than normal between him and Ayala at the back
5 Friend: Bolasie made it tough for the left-back but he started brightly in an attacking sense and his cross led to opener;
6 Forshaw: Would have preferred for his return to Goodison to be better than this
5 De Roon: Got stuck in with a few tasty challenges but was never in control;
5 Nsue: Didn’t do enough going forward as a winger but Middlesbrough tended to be on the back foot
5 Ramirez: Unable to really make his mark in a way that Barkley did in the same role
7 DOWNING: The pick of the Boro players and sent over a number of good deliveries;
5 Negredo: Forced the Boro goal by headbutting the keeper’s arm but was given a tough afternoon by the Everton defence.
Subs:
Nugent (for Nsue 59): Showed plenty of energy and drive when he came on. 6
Fischer (for Ramirez 70): There were a few flashes to encourage his boss. 6
Clayton (for Forshaw 84)
(not used): Guzan (gk), Espinosa, Chambers, Traore.
MAN OF THE MATCH: IDRISSA Gueye – a real nuisance to Middlesbrough’s play and often laid the foundations for the Toffees attacks.
