Newcastle 3 Reading 0
IN the end it turned out to be a comfortable afternoon's work for Newcastle United at St James' Park.
Kevin Keegan's men proved that the previous week's emphatic win at Tottenham was no flash in the pan as they followed it up with the most convincing victories over a poor Reading side.
It's a win that diminishes any lingering relegation fears and now a respectable mid-table finish is a realistic target.
Youngster David Edgar proved a more than able replacement for Steven Taylor, while full-backs Jose Enrique and Habib Beye provided the platform for United's success. Nicky Butt was equally as impressive in midfield with a simple but effective display - the same it could be said for central midfield partner Joey Barton.
Together, the pair rarely gave Steve Coppell's Royals a look in.
And once Obafemi Martins opened the scoring in the 18th minute there was only one team in the contest.
The feel good factor has finally returned to St James' Park under Keegan, as United fans were treated to some of the best football their team has played this season.
Michael Owen continues to answer his critics in the only way he knows best and his 43rd minute oozed class.
It was then left to Mark Viduka to round off a hugely satisfying afternoon with Newcastle's third goal, virtually walking the ball into the net.
It may take more than a win over Reading to convince the United fans that the good times are back, but on this evidence King Kev's men are on the right road.
