Dutch giants set for pre-season Wearside date

FOUR-TIMES European Cup winners Ajax have been lined up as an attractive pre-season friendly to help celebrate the 35th anniversary of Sunderland's 1973 FA Cup triumph.

The Dutch giants will arrive in the North-East on August 3 (kick-off 3pm) ahead of the Black Cats' second successive season in the Premier League.

The friendly is likely to follow summer dates in Portgual and Ireland, although Sunderland are yet to confirm any details of any other dates.

And chairman Niall Quinn said: "The 1973 team gave our club one of its finest moments, so we're delighted to mark their anniversary celebrations with what will be a showpiece game at the Stadium of Light.

"The match will also play a vital part in the manager's pre-season preparations, as well as an anniversary celebration for the '73 team, so it promises to be one very special occasion.

"Ajax are one of the biggest clubs in the world - their domestic and European record is there to be admired - while they also boast one of the best worldwide reputations for producing top, young players.

"They last played here to officially open the Stadium of Light 11 years ago and we're delighted to welcome our Dutch friends back to Wearside."

And Keane himself thinks that the visit of Ajax will seriously boost preparations ahead of the 2008-09 campaign.

"It's great to have top opposition lined up for our pre-season calendar," said the Irishman. "It will be an important game for us and our preparations for the Premier League season, but it should also be a top game for what is an important anniversary for this football club."

Ticket details for the Ajax game will be announced over the coming months.
