ENGLAND UNDER-21s (4-3-3):

7 Bond: Couldn’t really be faulted for either of Hofmann’s goals, and made fine saves to thwart Can and Meyer

8 JENKINSON: Defensively reliable all night and set up two of England’s goals with his rampaging runs down the right

6 Stones: Was fairly comfortable for most of the game, but didn’t get close enough to Hofmann for either of the striker’s goals

6 Gibson: Enjoyed one of the proudest moments of his career as he represented his country at the Riverside and more than did himself justice

6 Garbutt: Made plenty of surging runs down the left-hand side, but his final delivery wasn’t always what it should have been

8 Ward-Prowse: Was the driving force at the heart of England’s midfield all night, and displayed impressive composure to convert the winner

8 Forster-Caskey:  Generally the deepest of England’s midfielders, with his tidiness in possession catching the eye

7 Hughes: Involved in a number of England’s best moves and was always looking to be positive with his passing

7 Redmond: His pace made him a threat down the right-hand side and he drilled home a fine low strike for his goal

6 Ings: Forced the German keeper into a couple of fine first-half saves, but missed a golden opportunity in the closing seconds

7 Lingard: Should have scored from close range, but made amends when he found the back of the net with a crisp low finish

Subs:

Pritchard (for Hughes, 66): Ensured England remained on the front foot following his introduction and linked play in midfield well 7

Keane (for Gibson, 77)

Chambers (for Forster-Caskey, 85)

(not used): Bettinelli (gk), Keane, Moore, Woodrow.

Man Of The Match: CARL JENKINSON – The West Ham full-back was equally effective in defence and attack, with his positive overlapping play forming a key part of England’s goal threat.
