RONNIE MOORE will today make the first inroads on his plans to reshape Hartlepool United.

The Pools boss will meet chairman Ken Hodcroft, before speaking to his players tomorrow and letting them know who has a future at the club.

A retained list is likely to be made public at the end of the week, but it’s going to a short one.

Only a handful of players are under contract at Victoria Park – Scott Fenwick, Michael Duckworth, Brad Walker and Scott Harrison are four of them.

Jack Compton has already made his departure public on twitter and he wasn’t at Carlisle on Saturday for the season-ending 3-3 draw.

Three of the biggest signings made by former boss Colin Cooper – Marlon Harewood, Matthew Bates and Stuart Parnaby - are set to exit, with Tommy Miller also likely to leave.

And the futures of long-established Pools’ players Scott Flinders, Jon Franks and Neil Austin is to be determined by Moore, who has a balancing act to carry out as he weighs up player wages and budgets with the need to retain experience in his squad.

Squad players Darren Holden and Jordan Richards have not featured under Moore. Michael Woods, Nicky Featherstone and Dan Jones should be offered deals to stay.

Following Saturday’s game, Moore said: “We have to improve, we have to tighten up defensively. We know who needs to come in and what we need to do.

“It’s all going ahead now and the vast majority who were involved in this game won’t be here next season.’’

He added: “When we get the new blood in we will get them in to do it how I want to go about it and play my way. But we’ve done it with the squad we have with desire, shape and being narrow and had that never say die outlook.

“But you have to change it around because we can’t go into next season with that squad. The summer is massive for us, get the players in hopefully - and if we can’t then look elsewhere.

“We need probably two experienced centre-backs in, but where are we getting them from on our budget? There’s a lot of wheeling and dealing to be done, but I’m not going to be away because if I’m away and can’t enjoy it because I’m worrying about signings I would rather go down the Marina and have a beer in the sun.

“It’s a juggling act now, who do you keep with options, the players who go do their wages give us options to bring in eight or nine players? They probably just might.’’

Moore handed a first-start to midfielder Ebby Nelson-Addy at Brunton Park and, while he struggled and was replaced early in the second-half, Moore feels the introduction to League football will have done the former Aston Villa prospect good.

“If the young lads here don’t learn from this season, they will never learn from football,’’ said Moore. “The young kids will have learned an awful lot for their careers here.

“Nelson found it hard, that’s been my feeling. He needs fitness work and the game passed him by. But he’s got a feel for it and he knows what it’s like and where he needs to get up to.’’
