Pools fall to a slack Millwall reverse
HARTLEPOOL United fell to a miserable home 1-0 defeat to Millwall.
The visitors went a long way to making themselves safe from relegation with their deserved win, after an energetic and committed performance - something Pools failed to offer.
Gillingham's loss to Swansea means Pools are mathematically safe from the drop - Pools are nine points ahead with three games remaining but hold a far superior goal difference.
Millwall went into the game decimated by injuries, but it didn't show as they started the better team.
And they took a deserved lead when Jem Karacan sent in a cross from the left which was diverted into the net by Jay Simpson.
They should have been two goals up at the break, after a vicious shot by David Martin curled wickedly onto the underside of the bar.
Pools didn't create anything all game, as the visiting keeper Rhys Evans was never tested.
The only effort from Pools came at the start of the second half when substitute Ritchie Humphreys got forward from left back and shot wide of the mark.
Humphreys was a surprise omission from the starting line-up, as boss Danny Wilson started with Robbie Elliott at left back.
The visitors were always a threat on the break, racing out in numbers after dealing with Pools powder puff attacks.
And there could be no complaints that Kenny Jackett's side deserved their victory.
