Brown pleased with tally

JAMES Brown admits he feared a final day disaster after his Hartlepool United side started the day by conceding two early goals.

But, with the season seconds away from closing, the striker's 13th goal of the season earned a 2-2 draw at Walsall.

Brown's goals and talent put him in the frame to win the player of the year award at tomorrow's presentation evening, and the Tynesider is looking forward to a summer of rest once the event is over.

"We've come back well from going 2-0 down pretty early in the game,'' he admitted.

"We scored a late goal, which a lot of teams have done to us this season.

"I didn't know what was happening at 2-0 down, I thought we were going to get a hiding, but the lads were great and we could have won the game.

"We had enough chances in the second half but we are happy with a draw.'' He added: "I'm a bit of a mixture of being happy and disappointed with my own season.

"At the start I played well and obviously the injury didn't help halfway through, I think I missed about 12 games.

"It's something you don't want, especially when I've been injured before and missed a lot of games.

"But I've come back and scored a couple more goals, so overall I'm pretty happy.

"I will be taking it very easy in the summer, putting my legs up and not looking at football for a while and I will just relax.'' He added: "We had nothing to play for on Saturday, just pride, and a lot of people would have thought at 2-0 down we would have thrown the towel in.

"But it shows that we still care because we battled that well and got a point.

"We have had a bit of stick pretty much all through the season, I think. Obviously it was nice to give the fans a point on the final day.

"It's been frustrating overall for us because we know we have definitely got enough in the changing room to push up in the top half and challenge for things.

"But because of a number of things it hasn't quite happened this season.

"Hopefully we can push on next season and do well - the platform is there.

"People have got to remember that we just got promoted last season.

"We started the season off well and a lot of people thought Hartlepool were capable of promotion.

"Then we lost a few games and people started getting on our back. But I'm sure we will be back next season and do well.''
