HARTLEPOOL United were humiliated at Wycombe Wanderers, going down 5-0 in an error-ridden display.

Each goal was down to mistakes in the Pools defence, in a terrible performance against the team who started the day bottom of League One.

The Chairboys signed four players on loan this week, and by 11 minutes two of them had gave their side the lead.

First up, Paul Hayes raced at goal from inside the Pools half, beating Peter Hartley for pace, and after his first shot was saved he knocked in the rebound.

Six minutes later, fellow Charlton loanee Gary Doherty held off Sam Collins to head in the second from a corner.

Number three arrived on half-time as Evan Horwood and Scott Flinders failed to deal with a long ball and Grant Basey knocked into an empty net after a defensive mix-up.

Neale Cooper was raging at half-time, but ten minutes after the break three became four.

Flinders clearance was blocked by Hayes, Basey fed him the loose ball and the striker netted his second. Pools protested against Hayes’ interference with Flinders and for an offside against the striker, but to no avail.

And Basey made it an embarrassing five. He robbed Neil Austin too easily, moved into space and bounced a low shot past Flinders.

The result means the Chairboys have done the double over Pools this season - scoring eight times and conceding only a penalty.
