Fearless James making a big impression

TIME TO CELEBRATE: Luke James after his second goal TIME TO CELEBRATE: Luke James after his second goal

AGED 17 and with three goals to his name already, Luke James admits he plays with a fearless outlook.

The teenage striker has made a big impact since being given a chance at Hartlepool United in recent weeks, scoring twice in last weekend's victory over Carlisle.

While boss Neale Cooper accepts that clubs will be casting an eye over the Northumberland flyer, James takes it all in his stride.

He won't be training with Pools today, ahead of Saturday's game at Bury, as he has college studies to get on with.

The step from youth to first team has been a seamless one and he admitted: "I don't really feel fear because you've got to enjoy every minute of it.

"With the crowd behind you it's easier and I just love it.''

After scoring twice against the Cumbrians, James had a chance to earn a penalty for Pools, but admitted: "I didn't go down for the pen because I thought I was through on goal.

"I got back up and the goal was still a bit away so I tried to square it.

"It hit the keeper though -so maybe I should have gone down for the penalty!''

And the players in the Victoria Park dressing room have been quick to show their appreciation for his efforts.

"The lads gave me another round of applause when I got in the dressing room and the youth-team lads were waiting for me on the sidelines as well,'' said James.

"That will never get boring - I hope I'm applauded into the dressing room every week.

"My mam and dad were at the Carlisle game and I managed to find them in the crowd when I scored the first.

"I have to mention my sister, Rebecca. It was her 21st birthday and she said if I score I had to celebrate for her, so that was nice.

"Two of my best mates from Amble travelled all the way down on the train to come and watch me as well.

"I wouldn't say I'm a celebrity now in Amble because it's that small and everyone knows everyone else anyway.

"But everyone has been stopping me and saying what a great goal I scored (against Rochdale) and wishing me all the best.''

At the other end of the scale, the future of Nobby Solano, Pools' 37-year-old former Peruvian international is in doubt. He has not started a game since Mick Wadsworth's departure and has not been named in the matchday squad for the last three games.

It was reported yesterday he is ready to call time on his playing career and press ahead with his plans to become a coach.
