A WEEK earlier it was Scott Loach, this time around and Liam Donnelly was backing Matthew Bates to be appointed Hartlepool United boss.

Donnelly, back in the side after an injury picked up on Northern Ireland Under-21 duty, put Pools ahead at Tranmere in their 2-1 win.

Pools end the season 15th in the National League, winning five games from 13 under Bates since he was asked to take temporary charge after the dismissal of Craig Harrison.

“100 per cent yes, he should be appointed,’’ said the right-back.

“Myself and all the lads, everyone, knows what a good job he has done since he’s come in and come in under very difficult circumstances.

“All the lads are behind him 100 per cent, everyone wants to see him get the job.’’

Donnelly has been out for six weeks, but grew into the game at Prenton Park and was part of an effective back line.

“It was a performance that should have come a lot earlier in the season,’’ he reflected.

“It was something the fans deserved and I’m glad we were able to give it to them.

“We did well and I think we thoroughly deserved it.

“This should lay good foundations for us. If we kick on next season and play like that the there is no reason why we can’t be in the mix and get back in the Football League.

“This shows what we can do

“Tranmere have been flying, they are second in the league so it shows what we can do. We should be challenging in this league. We should be up there.’’

And Donnelly and Bates saluted the travelling fans. Clad in fancy dress, the 738 dressed as clowns behind the goal were rewarded with victory.

“It’s a bit of laugh seeing all the clowns when we celebrated but whether the Poolies were in fancy dress or not I’m sure they enjoyed today and we’re thankful we delivered the victory they deserved,’’ said Donnelly.

And Bates added: “Since I’ve been at the club I’ve always enjoyed the last away game of the season and seeing them all dressed up.

“It’s great, nice to see them all again and give them our best away performance of the season.’’
